A Production Music Library is a collection of is music that has been written especially for use in audio and audio visual productions, like radio and television broadcasts, commercials and jingles, motion picture and video scores and soundtracks, corporate & training presentations, Web sites, computer games, software applications and multimedia. The Westar Production Music Library contains music from some of the industry’s finest composers and studio musicians - and it’s a great alternative to the costly exercise of hiring your own composer or licensing popular music themes.

Production Music is generally placed in the background, behind the dialog or voiceover - it can set the mood, provide a suitable backdrop for a message, promote the product, activity or event being featured, identify the location of the scene or highlight the plot’s action.

Production Music is designed and licensed for synchronization applications in productions - it can either be stock music produced for ready use, or it can be commissioned from a composer as specialty compositions for a particular production.

Production Music Libraries usually contain at least ten CDs, and the best ones contain more than 100 CDs, offering music in a wide variety of styles and genres. Libraries are made available via a subscription lease and it is common for a library to release new CDs at several times throughout the year, in order to keep the music fresh and offer continued choice to clients.

A Production Music CD typically contains 8 to 15 compositions, each one offered in several different versions or lengths: a full length version, an underscore or rhythm track version (for more subtle use under voiceovers), and a number of different broadcast lengths (60 seconds, 30 seconds and 5 to 15 second stingers). The broadcast lengths are produced to eliminate the need for the user to create his own edits for specific kinds of production applications (like commercial spots).

Production Music can also be offered as a royalty free or buyout music product. Whether the music comes from a buyout or a leased product, if it is used in a broadcast or public performance production, its composers and publishers are also entitled to receive performing royalties from performing rights societies like ASCAP, BMI, SOCAN, PRS and APRA.
