high calibre production music, stock music, laser drop music, needle drop music, and music licensing for Broadcast, Corporate Video and Multimedia.

Professional Production Music (also known as “stock music”) is generally licensed on a lease basis to its customers. While some clients choose an “annual lease”, permitting unlimited and perpetual synchronization of the library’s music in all productions created during the term of the lease, many clients are now choosing a less expensive “pay as you play” option, wherein they only pay for music when and as it is used.

This licensing option was originally known as "needle drop" - referring to the act of lowering a phonograph needle on to a record to place the music in a production. Today, it is more commonly known as “laser drop” - referring to the play of compact discs instead of vinyl records.

With this option you typically have access to music either through online download or use of physical CDs. After you have signed up as a registered user of the library, you send in a license application each time you use the music in a production and remit a license payment. Westar Music also gives you the advantage of searching, auditioning and downloading all of our music directly from this Web site, through use of the MusicSource search engine. Use MusicSource to find just the right piece of music fast, then download it for instant use in your productions. Complete our online Synchronization License Application and you’ve got everything covered - it’s that easy!

The advantage to a per-use approach like this is that you have a very low initial cash investment, and you only pay for what you use. This production music licensing option is also very helpful if you budget music use as an expense in each production that you create.

At Westar Music, we offer a number of different licensing options under the laser drop banner, and they each have their own advantages, depending on the nature of your production or use of our music. Our Rate Card details the prices charged for different categories of use - note that each usage is defined as a music segment of 30 seconds’ duration (or less).
  • If you wish to use Westar Music in your productions strictly on a “pay as you play” basis and require only a few usages, then we suggest you determine your licensing rate from Option 1 on our Rate Card.
  • If you use a lot of our music in a single production, use Option 2 on the Rate Card - this production blanket laser drop license will save you money.
  • If you would like to license a single theme on an unlimited basis for a twelve month period, use Option 3 on the Rate Card - this is an economical way to lease the music for a finite period, when you do not require in perpetuity rates.
  • Finally, Option 4 on the Rate Card offers you the complete flexibility of the Westar Annual Lease. If you use lots of music in many different productions, this is by far your best option.
