Chapter 2 - Using FINDER - the Search Feature:

The Finder helps you perform both simple and more specific searches, depending on what you are looking for in our music catalog.

In general, the best search strategy is to start with a simple request and then, add more qualifiers to your search request if necessary.

Simple search requests can be made by using the following toolbar buttons on the left side of the Finder screen:

MusicSource Genres Nav Bar image.
MusicSource Styles Nav Bar image.
MusicSource Instruments Nav Bar image.
MusicSource Tempo Nav Bar image.
MusicSource Composers Nav Bar image.
MusicSource Keywords Nav Bar image.

This chapter of the tutorial contains the following sub-sections. You can combine the search techniques for these sections in order to build more specific search requests.

Searching by Music Genres
Searching by Music Styles
Searching by Instruments
Searching by Tempo
Searching by Composers
Searching by Keywords

Searching by Music Genres:

By default when you enter the Finder section, you are ready to search by music genres that have been defined for each composition in the Westar library.

Single Genre Searches:
Select a genre from the scrolled list and press the "Search" button at the right side of the screen:

MusicSource Opening Screen image.

Music genres are category names that are commonly used to describe music. Examples include:

  • Blues
  • Christmas
  • Comedy
  • Country
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Easy Listening
  • Folk
  • Jazz
  • New Age
  • Rock
  • Sports
  • Western and
  • World Music,
and there are many other genres and sub-genres in the list.

If you see a genre included in the list, that means that the Westar Music Library has music represented in that category.

Multiple Genre Searches:
If you wish to search for more than one genre in the list, hold down the Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) key while you scroll through the list and click on the additional genre(s) of interest.

If you wish to search several consecutive genres in the list, drag your mouse while you hold down the left mouse button.

Notice that as you add more criteria to your search, a list appears below the line to remind you of the search choices made so far.

Once your search criteria selections have been made, click on the "Search" button on the right side of the screen and your search results will appear.

MusicSource will display its search results to show those compositions which most closely match your request first.

The score given to each title indicates how many of your search criteria were matched (see the chapter on Search Results & Song Details for more details).

Combined Genre Searches:
If you wish to search for both a genre and another type of descriptor (for example, instrument), click on the genre of interest ("Easy Listening"), and then click on "Instruments" on the toolbar.

You don't need to hold down the Ctrl or Command buttons when you switch to "Instruments".

Now click on the instrument(s) of choice and then click on the "Search" button at the far right of the screen.

Notice that as you add more criteria to your search, a list appears below the line to remind you of the search choices made so far.

Searching by Keywords:

Clicking on the "Keywords" button in the toolbar takes you to a slightly different search screen:

MusicSource Keywords Search Screen image.

To search by keyword, type a word or phrase to search for and click on the radio buttons to indicate:

  • the Search Type (select one of exact phrase, all the words, any of the words), and
  • which database field(s) you would like the search performed in (select any or all of Title, Lyrics, Description).
Then click on the "Search" button on the right side of the screen and your search results will appear.

To enter a new search request, click on either the "Back" or "Start Over" buttons at the right side of the screen.

Sometimes keyword searching will be a "trial and error" exercise - if what you are looking for does not appear in a search result, you can either try a less complex keyword or phrase, or use one of the other search methods that have already been described in this chapter.

The next chapter of this tutorial provides full details on how to interpret and modify your Search results and how to print the information available about the compositions that are displayed within them.
